The John Crosland School Dedicates Dickson Foundation Lobby
Charlotte’s first school solely for children with learning differences and attention deficit disorder will dedicate its new lobby on Thursday, Sept. 26 and celebrate with a reception honoring contributors to the school’s success. Community leaders, The John Crosland School staff and friends have been invited to the dedication of the Dickson Foundation lobby.
The media is invited to attend the wine and tapas event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the school at 5146 Parkway Plaza Blvd. The Dickson Foundation made a significant contribution toward the construction of the lobby that gives visitors, students, parents and teachers their first impression of the campus.
The lobby, which features donor and heritage walls to be featured at the Sept. 26 event, is an impressive and welcoming new addition to the school. WGM Design, Inc. redesigned the 680-square-foot lobby, which will prominently display art, photography and historical pieces that reflect the school’s 35-year legacy.
“We are humbled by the generosity of the Dickson Foundation,” said Dr. Sean Preston, the Head of School who joined The John Crosland School in April from Cypress Heights Academy in Baton Rouge, La. “Their gift funded more than a lobby. Our new addition is truly a welcome center for everyone who comes to campus. It honors our long history in the community, and pays tribute to the people whose generosity helped build it.”
Formerly named Dore Academy, The John Crosland School is in its second year at its new six-acre campus near Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. About The John Crosland School The John Crosland School (formerly Dore Academy) opened in 1978 as Charlotte’s first school solely for children with learning differences and/or attention deficit disorder. The non-profit independent school provides individualized education to allow students in grades K-12 to achieve their highest potential.
The John Crosland School continues to be an innovative pioneer in the attention and learning disabilities fields. Crosland uses an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to teaching, enhancing classroom curricula by offering alternative individualized instruction, small classes, and assessment.
In addition to a foundation of strong traditional academics and a reading program that stresses a multisensory approach to teaching this most important of life skills, Crosland offers a unique program focusing on the needs of the whole child, including the arts, music, technology, and athletics. The school helps ensure students with financial needs have access – 20 percent receive some level of financial help – and the principle on which the entire philosophy is built never changes: There is no limit to what a child can accomplish. More than 90 percent of the graduating seniors go on to attend two-and four-year college programs.
